Pop up art gallery

Pop-up art gallery set for the town

Exmouth art fans are in for a seasonal treat with the opening of a new pop-up gallery.

The Fine Art Gallery, in Church Street, is the brainchild of Exmouth artist Simon Ashby.

Initially, the gallery will be open between November 23 and December 24, selling original paintings, mostly depicting Exmouth and the surrounding area, and limited edition prints and cards.

However, if it proves to be a hit, it may return on a seasonal basis, and could eventually be full time.

He said: “I’ve had lots of exhibitions at my house before, but people don’t really like to go to your home. I felt I needed more of a proper gallery really.I was walking past a pop up shop and began to wonder how they worked and how to establish a space for local art. It’s been a whirlwind really over the last three weeks. We’re really chuffed to have found this space. It’s all systems go, and it’s exciting.”

The gallery, opposite the Post Office in Church Street, will be opening on November 23 at noon.

On the opening day there will be a chance to win an original painting in a live raffle at 1pm. Simon will also be holding a painting demo on the 20th December 11.00am, your chance to find out more about fine art painting.

Fascinating Fine Art Showcase

Drawing his inspiration from the incredible beauty of the landscape in Devon and Cornwall is Exmouth-based artist Simon Ashby.

He first began painting around 10 years ago and is self-taught. On display is his painting ‘Polzeath Beach’.

Simon said: “I began painting after reluctantly deciding to give up a passion of mine, music tuition, as it was beginning to affect my hearing. Painting just absorbed me in a unique way, right from the start.

“Very early on I found that the work I produced with the greatest ease was when outside, on location, rather than in a studio. It just seems to fit perfectly with the loose, impressionist feel of my work.

“Being directly in front of my subject helps me to capture the shifting landscape that much better. I’m so fortunate to have such a vast array of natural beauty right on my doorstep and on a visit to a friend in Cornwall, we decided to go to Polzeath beach.

“I pulled up in the van and opened the doors to find the perfect scene in front of me. I painted the picture in about an hour – using acrylics helps me to capture an image really quickly.”

The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts was formed by a group of artists based in the South West at the beginning of the millennium.

Its purpose was advancing the education of the public in the fine and applied arts, and promote the appreciation and practice of the fine and applied arts.

Opening times of the annual open exhibition are 9.30am to 5.30pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 9.30am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday. Visit www.southwestacademy.org.uk
