Standing on the quayside at Kingswear looking towards the Royal navel collage at Dartmouth, I started to paint. The weather was changeable so I needed to move fast, the ground colour was mid grey which helped because all of the greys in the sky and land which would show through at the end of the painting. The (composition play) between the white cloud and the collage building makes the picture more interesting. This painting is available to buy from the SHOP

MATERAILS USED

Painting surface 6mm MDF, primed with 2 coats of white gesso and 1 coat of mid grey gesso

Mid grey gesso is a mix of white gesso, ultramarine and burnt sienna acrylic paint

  • CERULEAN BLUE
  • BURNT SEINNA
  • YELLOW ORCHE
  • CADMIUM YELLOW MEDIUM
  • TITANIUM WHITE ( ALL COLOURS WINDSOR AND NEWTON ARTIST)
  • TURPINTINE MEDIUM
  • BRUSHES, ROSEMARY AND CO AND ARTISAN BRUSHES
  • RAGS AND PAPER TOWELS FOR REMOVING PAINT

To make Darks, Blacks and Greys = Ultramarine blue + Burnt sienna + Titanium white

To make Greens, Dark greens = Ultramarine blue + Burnt sienna + Cadmium yellow + Yellow orche

To make Browns = Ultramarine blue + Burnt sienna + Yellow orche + Cadmium Yellow + Titanium white

To make the Sky and Water = Cerulean blue + Ultramarine blue + Burnt seinna

The quantity of each colour is a personal preference and mixing the right colour will take time and although colour is very tempting, tone is more important
