Painted on location in mid summer. The big Wheel is only running in the spring/summer so its nice to catch it in a painting then. The scene is captured “against the light” with the sparkle on the water. This painting is for sale at Davidson Gallery Totnes
Tonal values
For the sparkle on the water to register and look right the tonal values have to read correct. Tonal values are (how light or dark something is)
In this photo of Torquay Seafront (below) I have turned the picture into basic tonal values (light and dark) I have also labelled 1 to 4, 1 being the lightest and 4 being the darkest
1 Lightest tone
2 Light middle tone
3 Dark middle tone
4 Darkest tone
