It was a windy day but surprisingly the sea was flat. I took shelter by the coast guard building from the wind and started to paint, I put the cliff in the picture to add balance, contrast and perspective. The cliff could look like a big black mass but by keeping some cool colour in the cliff shadows gives it more interest. This painting is available at Davidson Fine Art Totnes

Photographs can never tell you the full story of a landscape but they are good for reference. Most artists use photos in some capacity when they work, whether to jog their memory of a particular place and time or to record details.
